Summary

MP3 CD Format Ninth House meets The Dead and the Dark in this gothic dark academia novel that delves into the human capacity for great love, great art, and great evil。  Magni animi numquam moriuntur。 Great minds never die。  The students in Corbin College's elite academic society, Magni Viri, have it all--free tuition, inspirational professors, and dream jobs once they graduate。 When first-gen college student Tara is offered a chance to enroll, she doesn't hesitate。 Except once she's settled into the gorgeous Victorian dormitory, something strange starts to happen。 She's finally writing, but her stories are dark and twisted。 Her dreams feel as if they could bury her alive。 An unseen presence seems to stalk her through the halls。   And a chilling secret awaits Tara at the heart of Magni Viri--one that just might turn her nightmares into reality; one that might destroy her before she has a chance to escape。  All That Consumes Us will pull readers into a hypnotizing, dark reverie that blurs the lines of reality and shows that the addictive nature of ambition--and its inevitable price--always claims its due。

I listened to most of this as an audio book but then had to read the last few chapters when my audio book returned and then had a wait list。 So the fact that I didn't finish the audiobook within the time allotted is weighing heavily on my review because if I really liked it, I would have been listening to it with greater frequency。 Part of the poor rating could also be because I thought the audio book narrator had a whiny voice? It was overall just fine。 I listened to most of this as an audio book but then had to read the last few chapters when my audio book returned and then had a wait list。 So the fact that I didn't finish the audiobook within the time allotted is weighing heavily on my review because if I really liked it, I would have been listening to it with greater frequency。 Part of the poor rating could also be because I thought the audio book narrator had a whiny voice? Queer dark academia is my jam, and this might be my favorite Erica Waters book。 I loved the spooky ghosts and the idea of losing yourself to pay for your future。

see, the thing is, if you have the gall to compare your book to the secret history then it better have tartt level writing, themes, storytelling capabilities, and characterization。newsflash: 100% of the books that are marketed this way have NONE of the above

Good dark academia title with no sexy times。 And even though it takes place in college, the main character and her non-binary roommate are both 17。

Really enjoyed this one。 Will definitely add it to the Dark Academia Instagram post I'm working on。Now, this is the type of Dark Academia that I love。 A lot of the ones I have been reading lately were either too full of drama or didn't have enough of the DA atmosphere。 I like my DA with a side of supernatural or murder/mystery, and this has BOTH。 It also mixed in queer characters and found family。 This was just -chefs kiss- a lovely dark little story。 Really enjoyed this one。 Will definitely add it to the Dark Academia Instagram post I'm working on。Now, this is the type of Dark Academia that I love。 A lot of the ones I have been reading lately were either too full of drama or didn't have enough of the DA atmosphere。 I like my DA with a side of supernatural or murder/mystery, and this has BOTH。 It also mixed in queer characters and found family。 This was just -chefs kiss- a lovely dark little story。 。。。more

It's another perfect book for autumn evenings。It was a wonderful mix of dark academia, ghosts, haunting vibes, mysteries, and secrets。 When books are set in the university, revolve around achievements/academic validation and student societies/sororities, consider it sold to me。 I really enjoyed exploring and being introduced to this student society with all its secrets together with the main character and sort of discovering that brilliance has its price。 I did feel like the ending was a little It's another perfect book for autumn evenings。It was a wonderful mix of dark academia, ghosts, haunting vibes, mysteries, and secrets。 When books are set in the university, revolve around achievements/academic validation and student societies/sororities, consider it sold to me。 I really enjoyed exploring and being introduced to this student society with all its secrets together with the main character and sort of discovering that brilliance has its price。 I did feel like the ending was a little underwhelming for me, but everything else was enjoyable throughout the story。 It passed the autumn vibes。 。。。more

This was a stunning gothic story。 The writing was eerie and filled with tension, clear and effortless。 I loved the mystery surrounding the secret society and its members, and how that led to mistrust and paranoia for the main character, who was intentionally kept out of the loop throughout the book。There were a lot of underlying themes of loneliness, love, and belonging that manifested in different ways through many of the characters - living and dead alike。 I liked how Isabella and Tara had so This was a stunning gothic story。 The writing was eerie and filled with tension, clear and effortless。 I loved the mystery surrounding the secret society and its members, and how that led to mistrust and paranoia for the main character, who was intentionally kept out of the loop throughout the book。There were a lot of underlying themes of loneliness, love, and belonging that manifested in different ways through many of the characters - living and dead alike。 I liked how Isabella and Tara had so much in common, even though they couldn't be more different in how they handled their circumstances。 Isabella made a strong antagonist and was very clearly defined as a character - much more than the director of Magni Viri, who felt more like a caricature。I liked that the book was inclusive in the way it had various queer characters, but I also can't help but feel that it was a bit obvious, and at the same time, underutilized。 While I love that they were included, it felt forced to have five queer characters in the same small group of Magni Viri members, and other than an offhand remark about one of the characters being disowned by their parents, there was no real conflict or underlying message to go along with it… which would be fine if there was one queer character, but it felt so intentional to have so many in the small cast that I was surprised that there wasn't more of theme of acceptance to accompany it。That aside, I truly enjoyed the book。 It may be one of my favorite gothic stories I've read over the past few years, and the plot felt fresh, and not like a rework of the same haunting story I'm used to seeing in gothic stories。 I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys the genre。 。。。more

I'm bad at writing reviews but felt like I had to put into words how much I loved this book。 The plot, the sweet romance that it's included, the dark academia vibe, the paranormal touch。。。 it blended perfectly into a book I do not think I will forget anytime soon。 Congrats, Erica, for such a good book! I had to give up on this after the *second* character in this novel—both of them are college freshman—mentions that they read Donna Tartt's The Secret History before arriving。 Why? *So they would know what college was like。*This is presented without any irony, either from the characters or the author/narrator。 Honestly what?? (originally reviewed at thelibraryladies。com) I’ve really loved this current trend in fantasy towards dark academia。 It’s no surprise, but many librarians are just the sort to have fond memories of upper education, so sprinkle in a bit of magic, and you’re really onto something! I also really love this cover, as I think it perfectly conveys the overall tone of this book before you even crack open the book。 Unfortunately, the story itself didn’t work for me quite as well as the artwork did。Wh (originally reviewed at thelibraryladies。com) I’ve really loved this current trend in fantasy towards dark academia。 It’s no surprise, but many librarians are just the sort to have fond memories of upper education, so sprinkle in a bit of magic, and you’re really onto something! I also really love this cover, as I think it perfectly conveys the overall tone of this book before you even crack open the book。 Unfortunately, the story itself didn’t work for me quite as well as the artwork did。While I ultimately was left frustrated with this read, let’s start with what I did like。 As I was putting together this post, I saw one reviewer compare the overall tone of this book to an episode of “Supernatural。” As a huge “Supernatural” fan, not only do I think this is a massive compliment, I also think it’s fairly spot-on as far as the theme and plot of the book。 Like the show, the story builds up a creepy, looming presence that focuses on ghosts, possession, and the main character’s slow realization that she may not be in full control of her own actions。 There’s a level of psychological horror that works very well, and the writing was very successful at illustrating the spooky nature of the events going on at the school。 I particularly enjoyed the growing sense of paranoia and confusion that builds towards the book’s conclusion。Unfortunately, the book fell apart with the main character herself。 I really tried to like Tara, but things didn’t start off well when she immediately threw off strong “not like other girls” vibes when she meets her roommate and with how she generally presents herself to the reader。 And then, throughout the novel, she made decision after decision that I just couldn’t understand。 Not only were the decisions themselves incomprehensible, but she would literally flip and flop her mind between one thing and another, sometimes within only a few pages of each other。 It made for a frustrating read and left Tara a fairly unlikable character。 This could be a case of me simply not being the target audience for a YA character, but I do think teenagers can be written better than this。I didn’t love this book, but I do think that it will appeal to a lot of YA fantasy readers。 The pacing is quick and the writing is solid。 If you start out the book and find yourself enjoying Tara, than you’re probably through the woods on what bothered me the most。 But if you’re an adult reader who is character focused, this may not be the right read for you。Rating 7: A lot of atmosphere and a creepy build of tension and paranoia were enjoyable, but I struggled to enjoy the book due to my frustrations with the main character。 。。。more

There were certainly some creepy vibes, some unexplainable happenings, and a semblance of learning。 Perhaps the advertisement should be altered to "Ninth House Lite, for the YA set。" 3。5✨I was promised a dark academia novel with Ninth House vibes and this。。。sort of delivered? Is it dark magic that allows them to be so talented? Finish reading to find out! Not to mention how similar the main characters dialogue and inner turmoils are。 I don’t say that to say this is a copy or was even inspired by Bunny。 I say it because when you’re publishing a book that is similar to another incredibly popular (150,000 goodreads reviews) book that came out 4 years ago, you’d think you’d want to set yourself apart, change some details without changing the crux of the story。 But instead it’s difficult not to draw comparisons between the two。 They honestly could be set at the same university, same classes (especially the read-aloud lit critique scene)。 The main reason I’m DNFing though is because of the main character。 Being in her head is insufferable。 I actually turned off the audiobook and walked in silence the rest of the way home because I could not stand another minute of listening to her whine。 I get it。 She’s had a rough life。 But I’ve read books with characters who had a much tougher go of things and they are not as whiny for as long as she is。 I am not exaggerating when I say that 2/3rds of the way through the book, she has done nothing but whine and woe-is-me for 95% of that time。 If she’s happy for even five minutes she brings the mood back down and finds something to complain about。 Girl seriously needs therapy and Lexapro。I do like to typically end things on a positive note, so here it goes: I liked the casual queer rep。 There’s a bisexual main character, lesbian love interest, and agender peripheral character。 And the scary/ haunted elements were well done, they definitely spooked me。 。。。more

with how the latest new release lets me down, i'm so, so glad this one didn't。 some parts does frustrate me and felt like it got glossed over too quickly, but the story itself is resolved well, the build-up towards the reveal isn't too much or too little, and the characters have their own voices。 i'd say it's quite solid and i really like it with how the latest new release lets me down, i'm so, so glad this one didn't。 some parts does frustrate me and felt like it got glossed over too quickly, but the story itself is resolved well, the build-up towards the reveal isn't too much or too little, and the characters have their own voices。 i'd say it's quite solid and i really like it 。。。more
